Outdoor Adventures in Red River, NM

Outdoor Adventures in Red River, NM

There’s an element of adventure that lingers in the valley. You can sense it the moment you take that first step out of the Jeep and breathe in that fresh Aspen air. For small town folk who just go with the flow of the river, we sure do live life on the edge of Wheeler Peak. Here’s a list of some of our favorite outdoor adventures.

Hunting in Red River

Pack up your Winchesters and best blaze orange gear and head out on a back road because Red River has some of the best big and small game hunting in the Southwest. Located in Game Management Unit 53, Red River is surrounded by wilderness areas such as Wheeler Peak, Latir Peak, and Valle Vidal – just make sure you have your hunting license and habitat stamp permit. You can find species such as bear, deer, elk, bighorn sheep, quail, bobcat, badger, beaver, turkeys, and so much more.

Hiking in Red River

Around here we use the phrase “take a hike” quite literally. You’ll find hiking trails all around town that weave through the forest and up the mountain. There are hikes for everyone with beginner trails such as Red River Nature Trails all the way to the most difficult trails such as Wheeler Peak Trail.

Fishing in Red River

Find your favorite spot along the riverbank outside of Bear Bait and wait for the fish to start biting. Red River has plenty of opportunities for local fishing from lakeside fishing, wild streams and special “catch and release” ponds. Grab some bait and tackle from one of our local Angler stores for some walk and wade fly fishing adventures in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Rock Climbing in Red River

Hang on tight cause Red River is home to some of the most diverse climbing in the area. Whether you’re a beginner or you’ve been climbing your whole life, you’ll enjoy the various climbs from short approach to backcountry multi-pitch all day climbing. Some of our favorite climbs are Bandito (5.7), Bounty Hunter (5.10B), Moonshine (5.8), and Desperado (5.9).

No matter what type of adventure you’re looking for, there’s an adventure waiting for you in Red River. Are you ready to come and explore the mountain for yourself? Don’t fight it, the mountains are calling you home!
