Why Red River is a Destination for Your September Vacay

Red River is a small mountain resort town in Northern New Mexico. Located in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, Red River is one of the small towns located along the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway. Red River offers the perfect balance of outdoor recreation and relaxation for everyone. There are many reasons why guests visit us in the month of September. Listed below are just a few of the pros of visiting our mountain playground in the fall.

Color Changing of the Aspens in Red River

Normally, towards the end of September is when the Aspens leaves start to change from green to yellow. This time varies every year depending on the weather. The weather begins to be a lot cooler in the mornings compared to what it is back home. Already the mornings here have been around 35 degrees!

Best Fishing in the West

Here in Red River you will find some of the best fresh-water fishing. From fishing in the town ponds, the Red River, or any of the nearby lakes. Bring your fishing gear or stop by Red River Angler and Sport to gather your items that you may need while fishing. It is also a great time to book a guided fishing trip or to take the boys or gals fly fishing. Fishing in Red River is great year-round but in the fall there aren’t as many fishermen due to families going back to school. Take advantage of the quiet town and prepare dinner with your fresh catch!

Hiking Trails in Red River

Easy trails, hard trails, short ones, and long ones, Red River has them all. All the trails will be less crowded during this time and the weather is amazing! You might even have better luck at seeing wildlife as they move more during this time of year. You can find a list of hiking trails that Red River has to offer here

ROV Trails in Red River

September is one of the best times to bring your ROVs or rent them in Red River. The town isn’t as busy during the month of September therefore the trails won’t be as packed. This gives you the opportunity to ride every trail you want while visiting us. This is a great time to hike up to Wheeler Peak and camp. Pack your sleeping bags, tents, and food and enjoy a night or two on the tallest peak in New Mexico.

Cool Mountain Weather

We might be a bit biased, but we think the fall weather in Red River is the best, hands down! Imagine building a fire in the evenings to keep warm and roast marshmallows for smores! You’ll head to bed and wake up to chilly weather in the mornings. As the day goes on it warms up just enough to wear a light-jacket. The weather is so refreshing!

Come out and enjoy our beautiful town of Red River with the family. September is one of the best times to plan a trip out West. Call us today to book your weekend mountain getaway! The weather can change daily so be sure to pack clothes for all seasons, especially winter!
