Red River or Taos – What You Need to Know Before You Book

When deciding on a destination for your next family vacation, there are a few options you can choose from in the Enchanted Circle. Between Eagle Nest, Angel Fire, Taos, Questa, and Red River, two of those cities are the most popular when it comes to family trips: Taos and Red River. Keep reading because we are going to tell you why you should choose Red River over Taos when it comes to your next mountain vacation.

Located about one hour north of Taos, Red River is often known as the Texans’ playground. The tiny little ski town is about one mile long, and it is very big when it comes to its natural beauty. Family-oriented, Red River is the perfect place for the whole family to visit. Red River offers everything you need in about one square mile (unless you prefer to stay in the Upper Valley). Whether you’re staying in the Upper Valley or in town, you have access to almost anything and everything you need to make your family vacation enjoyable and memorable.

Hiking/ROV Trails in Red River, NM

Red River offers some of the best hiking and ROV trails in Northern New Mexico. One of the best parts about it is that some of our properties have trailer parking so that you may drive your ROVs straight from your cabin to the trails. You may also drive your ROVs to and in town as long as you stay off Main Street. You may cross Main Street to get to High Street and River Street. It comes in handy when you’re out for a ride and decide to grab dinner in town before heading back to your cabin. Please ensure you comply with the local ordinances and requirements before driving your ROV within the town limits. This is something that our small town of Red River offers that you won’t find in Taos. It is now legal to drive your ROVs on Main Street in the town limits of Red River, just be sure to read the Taos County OHV Ordinance for any clarification regarding ROVs in our county!

Various Fishing Spots in Red River, NM

From fishing by the river to the town ponds, you’re bound to catch an amazing dinner! Stop by any of the local stores for fishing equipment or bait. Sitzmark or Williams Hardware has some of the best to choose from, and both stores know their fishing for Red River trout! Winter Activities in Red River, NM

Snowshoeing in Red River, NM

Enchanted Forest offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and Yurts for lodging if you want to be in the middle of the forest. Book a time this winter to snowshoe through the Enchanted Forest and then head back to town for dinner at Capo’s for some yummy Italian food.

Snowboarding and Skiing in Red River, NM

Planning your ski trip to Red River is smart due to the proximity to the slopes. You can stay as close to the mountain as you’d like or stay in the Upper Valley and have no problem getting to the lifts with the right vehicle. That is one of the best things about Red River, the town is located at the bottom of the ski lift. If some people in your group don’t want to ski, then they have the whole mile stretch of town to shop til they drop! Red River is the perfect ski town for families and beginners alike. There are a lot of green ski runs, and even the blue and black runs are easy to navigate if you feel confident skiing the greens. The mountain is big but not too big, making exploring it easy and fun. There are only three areas where you can end at the bottom of the mountain, so getting lost or turned around is pretty challenging.

Take your pick of hiking, fishing, horseback riding, shopping, skiing, snowshoeing, and snowboarding. There’s something for everyone with our various summer and winter activities. Red River is like an all-in-one stop kind of place. We are pretty confident you won’t find anything like our little town, not even in Taos.
