Tips for First Time Snowboarders

Are you thinking about hitting the slopes on a snowboard for the first time? If you are, then you’ve come to the right place! We will talk about snowboarding and tips for those first-time snowboarders! Red River is the perfect place to learn how to snowboard, and I’m here to tell you why! Snowboarding can be scary and feel overwhelming as a beginner, especially if you have never tried strapping your boots into the board.

Finding the Right Board

Finding the right snowboard is important because there are so many different ones, and they all ride differently. If you’re hopping onto a snowboard for the first time, look for a snowboard that has a rocker camber. This will place a rocker under each foot which will help not catch the edge as much when you’re learning to turn. The camber helps the edge dig when turning, allowing you to turn easier without relying on your edge! If you’re not sure which board would be the best fit for you, you can ask the pros at Sitzmark for their help.

Proper Snowboarding Gear

Having the proper footwear is the most essential part of having fun on the mountain. Make sure that you only wear one pair of socks with your snowboard boots. DO NOT LAYER SOCKS. I can promise you that one thick sock will be enough to keep your feet warm!

In your many layers that you’ll want to wear while out in a snow blizzard, you should also wear tailbone padding shorts! Trust me when I say that you need these, especially as a beginner. This padding will protect your bottom and, most importantly, your tailbone! Gloves, beanies, and goggles are some other items you should have when you’re ready to hit the slopes!

Snowboarding Lessons – Take Them

Taking snowboarding lessons for beginners may not be the coolest thing to do, but it can help you learn the foundations of snowboarding and give you confidence. You will learn how to strap in, how to get going, and how to stop. These things are vital to know and practice on the bunny slopes before heading up the big mountain. Have a friend take lessons with you so that you can both catch on at the same pace and you can have fun and make memories as you learn your board! Red River Ski & Summer Area offers group lessons as well as one-on-one instruction.

Always Look Where You Want To Go

It’s important to remember that when snowboarding, wherever you turn your head and look, that is where your snowboard will take you. So as you’re cruising down the mountain, always keep your eyes focused on where you want to go. You don’t want to make the mistake of watching your feet because you won’t get very far, and you may fall more often than not.

Along with keeping your eyes forward, you also want to remember to bend your knees. This can help you control your board and maneuver however you want to. Keeping them bent can also help you think-fast for when you need to stop or detour around someone or something.

Remember that everyone is a beginner at snowboarding once in their life. Practice and patience will help you feel more confident in your ability to ride a snowboard!
