Red River is a great place to visit even when the slopes are closed. There are so many different adventures waiting for you to take advantage of. Listed below are a few adventures you should do while visiting your favorite little mountain town.
Fishing in Red River
The best trout fishing in the west is located in Red River, New Mexico. The town ponds as well as some of the private ponds are stocked with Brooks and Rainbow Trout. Follow highway 578 into the Upper Valley and take advantage of river fishing. This one mile stretch of the Red River is designated Special Trout Waters with some of the best angling around bends and bushes. Take a trip over to Cabresto Lake where you will catch some great trout and make great memories as well as an amazing supper.
Backpacking-Hiking in Red River
Experience the beauty of Carson National Forest with a backpacking trip with a guide from Bobcat Wilderness. Food and essential gears are provided by Taos Mountain Outfitters. Guests must provide their own personal gear such as jackets, hiking shoes, toiletries, and a water bottle. You will hike the Columbine-Hondo trail with a local guide who is trained in first aid and has great knowledge about the area you will be exploring. Exploring the mountain is amazing when a local presents the forest in the light it deserves. Hiking through the mountains and spending time in nature with your loved ones or even by yourself with an amazing guide has been said to decrease your stress and blood pressure.
Driving the Enchanted Circle
Take the 84 mile drive through the Enchanted Circle. Come dressed and prepared for weather-changing conditions. When you are in our mile-long town of Red River it is always a good idea to keep a rain jacket on you at all times as it can and will rain without any warning. Pack a lunch for your trip or stop and eat at Hail’s Holy Smoked BBQ in Angel Fire as you continue your drive through the Enchanted Circle.
Off-Road Vehicles in Red River
Prepare to climb in elevation with your very own off-road vehicle. Whether you have a Polaris RZR or a Canam you can drive any of the trails. One of the most driven and most popular trails is Goose Lake Trail. This trail takes you up an additional 3,000 feet in elevation above Red River to a glacier lake with gorgeous views. Once you reach the top, walk around the lake and take a hike up to the top of Gold Hill where you can see Taos Ski Valley as well as Wheeler Peak, New Mexico’s highest point. You may get lucky and see bighorn sheep scaling the mountain while you fish Goose Lake during your off-roading adventure.
White Water Rafting in Northern New Mexico
Beginning April 1 through September 5th you can enjoy beautiful scenery and thrills for the whole family with a trip down the Rio Grande River in a white water raft. Purchase your tickets and spend a full day rafting a 16 mile stretch of the Rio Grande. Keep your eyes open for wildlife such as bald eagles and bighorn sheep.
