Red River, New Mexico could quite possibly be the best destination for family reunions by offering all the activities, restaurants, accommodations, and entertainment your family could desire in one location. Sitting at an altitude of 8,750 feet, Red River offers stunning views of the surrounding Southern Rocky Mountains and Carson National Forest. The average winter daytime temperatures are around 40 degrees, and average summer daytime temperatures are a pleasant 75 degrees. With average snowfall landing around 188 inches per year, there are tons of winter activities, as well as summer adventures.

Red River’s population sits around 477, so you’ll receive a warm welcome from all the wonderful residents and be able to enjoy that small-town feeling. The town itself is situated within 1 square mile, but don’t let that small size fool you! Surrounding the town are plenty of vacation rentals to offer everything from studios, rustic cabins, luxurious condos, or a six-bedroom spacious home.

Every household in your extended family will be able to find the perfect vacation rental for their stay, all while being within close proximity to one another. This enables for a ton of interaction among family members. Whether they need a pet-friendly home or prefer a vacation rental on the river, Red River has accommodations to please just about everyone. Some homes even offer near the slopes options or offer trailer parking for those family members that want to bring their ATVs.

Once everyone has arrived in Red River and has settled into their vacation home, it’s time to make some memories! The activities are endless in the surrounding areas!

During the summer months, Red River offers historical tours throughout town and the surrounding areas. We personally recommend The Little Red Schoolhouse. For adrenaline junkies, Hidden Treasure Aerial Park offers zipline activities. For hiking enthusiasts, we suggest joining in on a Llama Trekking Adventure. Fishing, hunting, and mountain tubing will also keep you busy. Each Thursday and Saturday during the summer, you’re able to enjoy a real old-fashion gunfight at Frye’s Old Town.

During the winter months, the skiing and snowboarding opportunities are phenomenal. There are three terrain parks in Red River, offering something from the novice to the expert level. Snowshoeing is always a wonderful adventure while giving family members the opportunity to talk and reminisce. For the more active family members, there’s cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing.

At the end of each day, the whole family can get together to share laughs and memories while roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over campfires. Some of the vacation rentals offer kitchens roomy enough to cook large meals and host family dinners. There are local restaurants, shopping opportunities, and plenty of things to do throughout the town. Red River is the ideal location for families to unplug and wind down from their normally hectic lives and enjoy spending time with one another, getting reacquainted, and sharing stories and history.
